No sooner did Vladimir land on this continent, along with his wife and five young children, did bad news come from home in Ukraine: One of his brothers had died in the war. Soon thereafter, while at the Mexico City hub run by Nova Ukraine and other volunteer organizations, the tragedy became doubly difficult: His other brother gave his life for his country.
Weighed down by grief, Vladimir continued his journey in the new world. He applied for humanitarian parole to enter the United States and was soon approved. But Vladimir did not have enough money to fly his large family to the United States. That’s where Nova Ukraine volunteers came in, raising money to pay for their ticket.
Today, Vladimir and his family are getting settled in Sacramento, California.
When the Russian invasion started in Ukraine, pregnant women and new mothers in a Kharkiv Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) were evacuated to an underground bomb shelter where they continued to give birth and care for their newborns. With the stress of the war, the number of premature births has increased throughout Kharkiv.
Doctors, nurses, and mothers living in this cramped, makeshift NICU need our support to continue caring for medically fragile newborns. With your donations, Nova Ukraine supplied a specialized ultrasound machine for this NICU and continues to support their ongoing medical needs.
Two elderly women spent three weeks in a basement in Kharkiv. One of them has diabetes. They were mostly immobile and in wheelchairs the entire time. Volunteers brought them to a former hostel that had been cleaned and retrofitted into a hospice-like facility. With help from Nova Ukraine’s funds, the volunteers took them in, washed them, helped them change and noticed that their feet were turning black. Since the ladies had trouble walking, they assumed that it was gangrene settling in.
In the photo: A nurse letting them know it wasn’t gangrene but, instead, bedsores and bruises. It turns out their feet were likely bruised because people were walking past them in the basement and stepping on them in the dark.
We are glad to report that both ladies are now doing well and walking!
Her evacuation to safety happened in the nick of time. Liudmyla holds tightly to her infant grandchild as she boards a bus to safety with her daughter and teenage grandson. She recounts how Angels of Salvation, a volunteer organization funded by Nova Ukraine, picked them up from the embattled village of Svyatohirs’k, just one hour before a Russian rocket blew up their home.
If it wasn’t for Angels of Salvation, Liudmyla and her family might not have survived. It’s for the sake of families like hers that evacuation volunteers with Angels of Salvation risk their lives every day, driving to and from areas of active fighting in eastern Ukraine. Since the start of the war, Nova Ukraine partners and volunteers have evacuated over 30,000 people and their pets from front-line cities in Ukraine.
